Tango Dance Artist Miriam Lea Awarded Prestigious Grant to Provide Free Tango Classes to Diverse Communities
Saint Paul, Minnesota – February 2nd, 2024 – Renowned dancer Miriam Lea has been awarded the Minnesota State Arts Board Grant for Arts Education. This grant will fund a series of free tango dance classes, workshops, and performances from March to May 2024, promoting cultural exchange and artistic exploration for diverse communities.
“Go Tango!” offers inclusive tango instruction to BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+, and low-income communities. The program culminates in public Milongas (social tango gatherings) and performances at Sabathani Community Center and Bataclan Tango in Minneapolis, MN, and Mesabi Community Band in the Iron Range, MN.
Go Tango! Offers:
• Boot camps: Immersive introductions to tango for beginners.
• Weekly Continuing Tango classes: Ongoing instruction for all levels.
• Pop-up practices: Casual gatherings for dancers to connect and practice.
These experiences welcoming BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+, young adults, and low-income communities, culminating in public Milongas and performances aim to:
• Highlight Argentinian tango culture and history.
• Foster cultural appreciation and understanding.
• Provide opportunities for connection through shared artistic experiences.
The Minnesota State Arts Board Grant aligns with Miriam Lea Dance’s mission to make tango accessible and enjoyable for all and is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
